Below is a list of common experiences your student may face or questions you, as a parent, may need answered. If you have a question that is not listed below, please feel free to use the "Email a Question" feature which will allow you to easily communicate with a member of the Admissions staff.
1. Should my daughter live on or off campus? What are the benefits of living on campus?
At Judson, we require that traditional-aged, single students live in a residence hall. Living in a residence hall provides students with opportunities to learn relationship skills that impact all areas of life and to participate fully in the life of the College. Residential living also provides convenient and cost-effective housing for students.
Exceptions are made for:
- Students living with a parent/guardian or spouse within reasonable commuting distance of the college.
- Requests for residence hall housing for students older than 23 years of age. If you are older than 23 years of age, you may choose to live off campus.
* Check out our online Catalog for more information on housing.
2. Who should I contact if my student is sick?
If your daughter is ill, you may call the Office of Student Life at 334.683.5108 or contact one of our local physicians. Check out our Health page here.
3. If something were to happen to my student, who should I contact for help or questions?
Once again, you can contact the Office of Student Life at 334.683.5108 or call the Academic Dean's Office at 334.683.5104.
4. If my daughter will not be able to attend class for whatever reason, who should I notify?
Notify the Academic Dean's Office at 334.683.5104.
5. I need to know how to contact my student or someone else on campus - who should I call?
Contact Student Services at 334.683.5108. They should be able to provide you with a listing of either your daughter's dorm room number or lobby phone number.
6. If my daughter is having computer problems, who should I contact?
Your student can contact the Computer HelpDesk at 334.683.5469 or helpdesk@judson.edu.
7. Should my daughter bring a personal computer to college with her?
Judson College believes that bringing a computer to campus is purely a personal decision. The student computer labs are open at convenient hours, so it is quite possible to get along well without one. Students are given a username and password as soon as they arrive on campus, giving them access to the academic/administrative network in the computer labs. Students are allowed to print 100 pages per semester in the labs at no charge. Additional print pages can be purchased in the bookstore.
The choice between a notebook and a desktop system depends solely on the student’s needs. However, it is strongly recommended that the computer be purchased from a reputable vendor so that there is a surety that the computer will be compatible with the college network. It is also suggested that a good surge protector be purchased as well. The Information Technology staff will not turn their backs if there is a need, but their ability to help may be somewhat limited where personal computers are concerned; so it is recommended that a good, three to four year warranty be purchased and that all of the start-up and software CDs, that come with the purchased computer, be brought to campus.
The Requirements for Computers Brought on Campus
Windows-based computer:
· 1.5 GHz or faster processor
· 40 GB hard drive
· 1 GB memory
· CD-RW drive
· Wireless Ethernet card
· Windows XP or Vista
· Microsoft Office Standard or Student Edition

· 40 GB hard drive
· 1 GB memory

It is very important that you make sure the antivirus definitions and Windows updates are current before arriving on campus. Otherwise, our system will not let you connect.
Note: Judson College has a "hands-off" policy in regard to student computers but the college will service any network problems that arise.
8. When is the last date to apply for admission?
Judson College has a rolling admissions policy but an application for admission should be made well in advance of the expected enrollment date.
9. How much does it cost to board a horse at Judson?
Judson is not currently accepting boarders on the college campus while in the process of completing a new equine facility and stables. However, if a student still wishes to bring her horse with her, Judson has several off-campus locations the student may board her horse for a fee.
10. My student needs help with classes - Who should I call?
Your student has an academic advisor. The advisor should be able to give incite into how your student can improve her grades, offer personal help to the student or locate a tutor. You can find your student's advisor by accessing the Faculty Directory at http://www.judson.edu/content.asp?id=84421 or, if you still cannot locate a number, you can contact the Academic Dean's Office at 334.683.5104.
11. If my daughter has been home schooled all her life, how do I send her transcripts, which are part of the requirements for admission?
First off, a Judson Admissions Representative will ask you if your student has been home schooled under an "Umbrella Organization." If so, we would prefer that this organization send us the student's transcripts.
If your student has not been home schooled under an "Umbrella Organization," and you (the parent) plans to send the transcripts yourself, we require that they be signed by you and notarized. Most towns have their own notary available for service. For questions, contact the Office of Admissions at 1.800.447.9472.
12. My student needs a job or would like to find an internship?
Work Study and lab jobs are available on campus to most interested students. Students should speak with their advisors about possible positions. Students can also contact the Career Counseling Office at 334.683.5108 for a list of possible jobs in the community or internship opportunities.
13. How does a student change her major?
Change of major / minor forms can be found in the Office of the Registrar in Jewett Hall. Students considering a change of major should consult with their advisor before making any decisions.
14. What kind of tutoring services are available at Judson College?
Judson offers many opportunities for tutoring services.
* In the Writing Lab, located on the ground floor of Jewett Hall, a student worker is available throughout the week to help other students with paper writing. Have grammar or sentence structure questions? All concerns can be answered by Writing Lab workers.
* Math study sessions are offered in the Lowder Science building throughout the week after class hours. Student tutors are available during this time, as well as the professor, to help those struggling with homework, preparing for exams or just needing advice about an equation.

Room: $2,225
Board: $1,760
Mandatory Fees: $105
Estimated Semester Total: $10,430

16. How safe is campus?
Judson College's Campus Security is available at all times of the day and night. Likewise, three main gates to the campus are locked after 5 p.m. each day to insure that all nightly visitors must first pass in front of the guard house before entering campus. To see more about safety at Judson College, visit our Campus Safety section or our Emergency page.
17. How can I best support my student emotionally during this time?
Keep an open line of communication with your student. Be aware that she may be experiencing a difficult transition from high school to college life, which is perfectly normal, and probably is feeling the first pangs of college exam-related stress or worry. She needs your support but not for you to compound her worry with yours.
Be understanding of the challenges and exciting things that can happen during your student's first year at college. Listen, support and encourage her to ask for help on campus if she needs it.
18. My daughter is in the ROTC but would still like to attend Judson what options does she have?
ROTC students interested in attending Judson College have a unique opportunity. The Army ROTC program at Judson is a four-year program that allows a college student to earn a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. ROTC students will take their academic classes at Judson and their military science classes / training at nearby Marion Military Institute. Scholarships are available. For information on continuing ROTC, visit our Army ROTC homepage or contact LTC Mike McKinley - 1.800.275.1914.
19. What safety plan does the campus follow in times of an emergency or inclement weather?
In each residence hall, there is one Resident Director (RD) and three Resident Assistants (RA). RD's and RA's are trained for emergency situations and threats of inclement weather. They are all Adult CPR / AED American Red Cross certified. In times of inclement weather, the RA's will check each room and notify students, sending them to the basement of their dorm where they will remain until the threat is over. If a student is not in a dorm at the time of inclement weather but rather in an academic building, security and staff will help direct the students to that building's basement. Also see our Emergency page.
20. Will my student need a car?
For classes, your student should have no need of transportation, as all academic buildings at Judson College are located within less than a five minute walk from residence halls. Other students on campus are more than willing to provide someone with transportation but if your student plans on traveling often, or wishes to return home for visits often, it might be a good idea that she have her own car.
Likewise, if your out-of-state student needs a ride to the Birmingham International Airport during holidays when classes aren't in session and residence halls are closed, she can often catch a ride with another student driving home.
Parking Decals are issued at the start of each school year and each student is guaranteed a free parking space on campus.
21. Where can my out-of-state student stay during small holidays and will her stuff be fine left on campus?
Rest assured your student will not be left without a roof over her head when residence halls are closed. During short holidays if your out-of-state student wishes not to return home, she may travel home with other students.
If your student is unable to make these arrangements for whatever reason, then she can also speak with the Academic Dean or the Office of Student Life to see what other arrangements can be made.
* Residence halls and the dining hall are closed for the duration of holiday breaks.
22. What about Health Insurance for my student?
At Judson College, all residential students must have proof of Student Health Insurance. The college provides some options for Student Health Insurance. Visit our Student Health Insurance page for more information.
23. How safe is Judson's campus for my daughter? Is there a lot of campus crime?
Crime on Judson's campus is almost nonexistant compared to the level of crime at other, larger colleges and universities in the state. See Judson's Annual Crime Report for detailed information on just how safe this campus is for your student.
