After majoring in English with a minor in technical communication, Leah took up a new career in 2000 as a software engineer. Today she works on a high-tech programming team that develops solutions for the intelligence and law enforcement communities and is pursuing a master's degree in software engineering at George Mason University. What prepared her to take such a big leap professionally?

"When you're a student at Judson, you're surrounded by other young women who are just like you-excelling academically and holding leadership positions. The experience gave me confidence that I've carried with me my whole life."

Pride and excitement resonate as Leah describes her projects, from periscope display systems on Navy submarines to a geographic info tool used by Centers for Disease Control to assist in their humanitarian relief efforts. "We actually went down to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit to do a field test of the software system we developed."

Although she's gone far, Leah still treasures the place and people where she got her start. "Dr. Thornton was my academic advisor for my English major, and he got me interested in technical writing. We've always kept in touch, and whenever my husband and I see family in Marion, I always try to go back and visit campus."
